…makes you want to run and hide. Which is why Sci put off checking her Google Reader for so long…she is also CURSING those people who don’t believe in putting things below the fold. I’m looking at YOU, Built on Facts and Starts with a Bang. But I’m looking at you with LOVE.
But there are things I missed. It is possible you missed them, too. (Is the comma in that previous sentence obligatory? Or is it like the Oxford comma?)
1) As some of you may be aware, Sci has given her diet over unto the goddess for a makeover. Turns out I am quite the carby little muffin. Sci always thought of herself as a pretty good eater, but apparently she is wrong. I am now trying to look for ways to get lean protein and veggies, on the CHEAP. And I do mean cheap. Grad student stipend, you know. Also, let it be know that I crave carbs right now. A lot. Seriously. One english muffin a day or whatever does NOT cut it. Pass the bread, please. And the pasta, and the pizza…sigh…
Dr. Pal has also decided to reformat his diet. So at least we’re suffering together. He has already lost FAR more weight than Sci. Sci, however, is a seriously active little thing and hopes to pass on the home stretch.
2) As an add on to this diet thing, Dr. Isis posted a GREAT post on hyponatremia. Being a runner, Sci has read a lot about this in Runner’s World and now fears it like the devil. Definitely something worth checking out.
An Aside: Seriously, Runner’s World. I am tired of seeing, every month, a variation on “run your first, or fastest, 5k/10k/half-marathon/marathon/ultra/tri” EVERY MONTH. Also, all the diet stuff is getting me down. You are supposed to be my happy antidote to Shape magazine, which only makes girls feel icky (“I lost 85 lbs by eating only boneless skinless chicken breast and rice and working out 10 hours a day, and YOU CAN TOO!!”). Can’t we have some science? What about that new idea of running as close to barefoot as possible? What are the fors and againsts? And though it might indeed be good in the long run, are there dangers for injury in the switch over? What kind of switch over should be done? Answer the REAL questions, please. An article on hitting the wall, the symptoms, and prevention would also be lovely. Shape up. Or I’m shipping over to National Geographic, even though their small print sux when you’re on the elliptical.
*ahem* Anyway…
3) Open Lab! Check out the entries! We’re up to almost 300. It’s gonna be some stiff competition in here, folks. But keep them coming in. Hopefully, Sci will not screw this up, and Open Lab will be totally awesome. Of course it will be.
4) In the realm of SCIENCE, there’s been some good posting up from the new Dr. Leigh on the pharmacology of marijuana, and Drugmonkey has a post on pot and stupidity.. There’s also a post up about addiction from Razib at Gene Expression. I can’t say I agree with his opinion, but more on that when Sci gets around to it.
5) Oh yes, He went there. Ethan of Starts with a Bang shaved his head and waxed his chest for charity!! Check out the photos and videos. I maintain that it’s less than mad-sciencey, but it’s for a good cause.
6) Drugmonkey has another excellent post up on animal research, this one focused on Pharma.

8) Awesome post from AK on cortical pyramidal neurons. A bit thick for those of you not in the field, but a lovely rehash of what I was just learning these past few weeks.
